Update for July 31, 2004

I can't believe it but already tomorrow it is off to Canada! This trip has been just too fast. There is a big part of me that just wants to miss that plane tomorrow!

The trip to Eastern Province was very encouraging. The idea of Community Schools is that parents will work along with administration and teachers to offer quality education and development to their children. Sometimes this is a hard sell, as parents really don't see the value of education. However, on this trip, in several locations I have truly seen development at the hands of the parents...largely due to Seedlings and the Feeding Program. I am told that what is happening at many schools is because parents are happy about the Feeding Program and are willing to put some personal effort forward to assure the Feeding Program continues. In some communities the parents have made mud bricks and built some very fine classrooms. In other places they have made some very nice houses for the volunteer teachers. In some places parents and children are involved in making and maintaining roads so that the HEPS can be delivered monthly. At Champheta, parents and children cut trees and slashed bush for three kilometers to make a road to the school. Truly, I thank God that parents are seeing the value of the Feeding Program and are willing to put some effort towards seeing it continue as well as seeing their children receive quality education...along with Seedlings in the Religious Education classes.
